October Coldwater fish of the month: Hong Kong Plec

Hong Kong Plec (also known as Butterfly hillstream loach and Chinese sucker fish) at Aqua home aquatics centre Leyland

Hong Kong Plec (also known as Butterfly hillstream loach and Chinese sucker fish)

Hong Kong Plecs are from high oxygen hill streams so require aquariums with excellent water flow and adequate aeration with numerous hiding places in the fish tank. Hong Kong plecs naturally graze on algae so an aquarium with high lighting and high algae growth is necessary for these inhabitants. These are great aquarium fish helping to keep the tank clean and add a unique addition to any coldwater aquarium.

Hong Kong plecs grow to a maximum size of around 3 inches or 7.5 cm and require an aquarium size of around 36” with pH readings from 7.0 – 8.0 and medium water hardness. Ideal water temperatures from 19 to 23 deg C. Can also be kept in groups of 3 or 4
